Each year WUMMA hosts several events to foster professional and personal development and recruit for our institution.
Recruitment
WUMMA participates in recruiting under-represented medical students to our residency programs. In the past members have:
- Attended the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) annual medical education conference and participated in the SNMA residency fair
- Attended the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) national conference
- Organized programming with our own local SNMA chapter to facilitate retention of medical students into our local residency programs
Networking and social events
As a part of its primary mission, WUMMA seeks to foster connection and community among under-represented trainees through various networking and social events including:
- Barbecue’s at Forest Park, a St. Louis gem and focal point
- Happy hours and brunches at venues across St. Louis
- General body meetings to discuss programming and catch-up with members
- Graduation dinner for residents and fellows completing their training
Professional development
In addition to promoting a sense of belonging and community, WUMMA also strives to support the professional development of its members in various ways such as:
- Providing support for current residents and fellows to attend the National Medical Association (NMA) conference
- Lectureships by diverse faculty members to the members of WUMMA and the greater medical community
- WUMMA-sponsored dinners with faculty members to allow networking in small groups with leaders across various specialties
- Dinner at the Dean of the Office of Diversity Programs’ home with medical students, residents, fellows and faculty members
Community service
WUMMA also encourages contributing to the larger St. Louis community, over the years members have developed various community service events including health fairs, food and clothing drives, and Habitat for Humanity builds.
